Arnoux fought back, utilizing his Renault Turbo engine's advantages. Three laps from the end, he was neck and neck with Gilles Villeneuve, who had led most of the race. The lead changed multiple times until Villeneuve crossed the finish line just seconds ahead of Arnoux. The intensity and mutual respect made it perhaps one of the greatest Formula 1 duels ever.
