On 31 March 1800, a fierce naval battle unfolded in the Mediterranean Sea off Malta during the French Revolutionary Wars. Valletta, Malta's capital, had been under siege for 18 months, with food supplies critically low, worsened by a French convoy's interception and defeat in mid-February. In a bid to seek French aid and reduce personnel in the city, naval commander Contre-amiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve dispatched his subordinate, Contre-amiral Denis Decrès, with the ship of the line Guillaume Tell, which had arrived before the siege. Over 900 men boarded the ship, set to sail for Toulon under the cover of night on 30 March.
