Overview
I am a Medical Laboratory Assistant with Northern Health in British Columbia, where I play a key role in supporting hospital-based diagnostic services. Originally arriving in Canada as an international student, I successfully transitioned into the healthcare workforce through determination, strategic planning, and a commitment to lifelong learning. My journey from an international newcomer to a licensed and working professional in the Canadian healthcare system offers relatable and encouraging insights for other international students navigating similar paths. After completing my diploma in Medical Laboratory Assistance from Cambria College, I undertook a hands-on practicum at Victoria General Hospital, where I developed competencies in ECG procedures, phlebotomy, specimen transportation, and interdepartmental collaboration. My clinical training helped me build a strong foundation in patient-centered care, confidentiality, and lab workflow efficiency. What makes my story stand out is my resilience and adaptability. Before entering healthcare, I worked in protective services, where I developed key transferable skills such as conflict resolution, calm decision-making, and professional conduct under pressure. These skills have greatly enhanced my performance in a fast-paced medical environment. I now mentor aspiring healthcare workers, particularly those new to Canada, on how to navigate licensing pathways, gain Canadian clinical experience, and prepare for real-world expectations in hospital settings. Fluent in English, Hindi, and Punjabi, I am able to support a wide range of mentees from multicultural backgrounds. My mentorship style is grounded, honest, and practical. I share real-life tips on job searching, resume building, interview performance, workplace communication, and professional etiquette in clinical roles. I am also actively pursuing further growth in the medical field, with interests in becoming a Medical Laboratory Technologist or writing the MCAT in the future. My story is a testament to what can be achieved through focus, adaptability, and the right support system. I hope to pass on the lessons I have learned to help others succeed confidently and avoid the common challenges that many international students face when launching their healthcare careers in Canada.
